EMF Mirror: Building a better sensor, Part 2

Tags: , ,

I managed to figure out a way to integrate the 1/8th of an inch power detector into an Arduino board (I mentioned this sensor in the previous post). One of the members on my thesis committee suggested that I ask the manager of the prototyping lab on soldering tiny chips. He did some research and found this circuit board schematic and after some modifications, printed out the breakout board for it (the prototyping lab has a circuit mill). Then he helped me solder the surface mount parts onto the board.

Protyping EMF Mirror Part 1

Tags: ,

This Thursday, I went to one of my committee member’s studio to work on the prototype of my thesis project, EMF Mirror. I changed the concept a bit; instead of one flat screen, the projection will hit several strips of screen material.

I’ll be exploring different materials: fabric, papers, perhaps vinyl. For the prototype, gray fabric that was left over from a previous project, was used:

For the arrangement, I thought of using a diagram of electromagnetic radiation, to further emphasize that the installation was visualizing electromagnetism. Also, arranging the strips of screen this way, allows for different, narrow corridors to form, that people can walk through.
So I printed the diagram to lay the strips on. I had to print it three times. The first time I printed it, it ended up being too small, the scale wasn’t big enough for an installation.

Kicking off Creative JavaScript Weekends!
I am inspired by the launch of the CreativeJS website so I’ve decided to do one or two experiments in creative uses of JavaScript either before, during, or after the weekend and blog about them here. These experiments may include some info viz, digital toys, animations, and what not. And all of it will run in current generation browsers through the use of HTML5 and Javascript. So stay tuned. (0)

Briefly addicted to Minecraft
You can tell because I spent two and half hours building a condo with floor to ceiling windows, a rooftop pool (originally going to be a lava pool), and a river running through it.

My first blog post for a major media company
In my last semester of college (2007), I was an intern for MTV’s games news (though it wasn’t MTV News, the way the company divided itself was counterintuitive) outfit. They had a blog and they would occasionally produce online video segments, that would also appear between TV shows. I had to write a post for their blog. More... (0)
