[photo taken by Robyn, check out other photos she took at my party, here. My own photos here.]. So last Saturday, I had a wine and cheese party with my BFFs. Friends, food, and good drink makes getting old infinitely more bearable.

The day before, bough the cheese and wine for the party. I got a damn good deal on brie (a wheel the SIZE OF MY HEAD, for only $5). Also, I couldn’t resist buying the sun dried tomato pesto, the smoked gouda and irish cheddar, so I ended up buying more food than I needed. After leaving East Village Cheese , I headed to Astor Wines and asked a sales clerk for some good reds, and she recommended a bourdeux and chianti (not like I know anything about wines though..)
On the day of, I slept in and woke up to watch High School Musical 2 (and to tidy up a bit). Then I met up with Anita (who came and visited me from Vassar, yay!) and Tiffany for dinner at Sobaya. Then we went back to my house.
Jess was already there when we finally came home. She came bearing a mix tape and so I popped that in (it’s a pretty good mix, btw). To get the party started, we tried to get a bottle of wine open but it took us like 15 minutes because we (me, Yvonne, Jess, Anita, and Tiffany) couldn’t figure out how to use the cork screw (yes we’re total wine n00bs). Good thing Dre came by and popped that thing open.
A few minutes after the wine bottle opened, Tai, Emm, Robyn, Olivia, Vicky, Jason, and Miranda arrived. Robyn gave me a box of cupcakes, Jason gave me a bouquet or orchids (my favorite!), and Miranda gave me a bottle of white wine. When everyone was finally gathered, Dre (aka Brooklyn to Budapest) serenaded us. He sang “More Than A Feeling” by Boston, which is one of my favorite songs. I tried to sing along, but I knew only one line (guess which one) but still good times.
Than after the performance (and the cake-eating), we played Taiko Drum Master for the PS2, because we’re total nerds.

I <3 <3 <3 my friends.
FYI, Christmas Day is not the best day to go to see the tree at Rockefeller Center. WORST CROWD EVER. But if you must see the tree, don’t go on the 5th Ave. side because people stall to take pictures and it causes human gridlock.

Anyway, my sis and I went to Midtown to look at the tree and Christmas windows at Lord and Taylor, after a good sushi lunch (sushi was 50% off) at St. Marks Place. We also stopped into Kinokuya which was having a 50% off sale on everything (except stationary) because they were moving to another location. I was hoping to get the newest issue of the Gothic Lolita Bible but the inventory was cleaned out. My sister got two Kingdom Hearts II posters for $5 though.

Anyhoot, hope everyone had a happy Christmas!

Your obligatory food shot. In addition to the usual Thanksgiving fare, we had sticky rice, Peking duck, fried shrimp as appetizer, and instead of pumpkin pie for dessert, there was ice cream cones for the kiddies, and tiramisu and cheesecake for the adults. Hope you guys had a good Thanksgiving! Besides eating, I spent most of the day studying for the GRE’s and playing Super Mario Galaxy.

Last night, went to Momofuku for Robyn’s dinner-gathering-thingie and met some of her friends. Alex B. from Vassar was also there. Poor Alex, maybe 2 out of the 25+ dishes at that place had some meat product in it and Alex is a vegetarian. Also unfortunate was that the main attraction, 5 pounds of roasted and marinated pork was placed in the center of table, right in front of him. But Alex seemed like he had a good time, and unlike the rest of us, the pork fat won’t go to his thighs.

Other yummy courses were a tofu-y, egg-custard like dish with tuna roe, a mushroom salad with radishes, bread with exotic butter, and veal sweetbreads, fried califlower, and whipped tofu, tapicoa, topped with furikeke and urchin. Apparently veal sweetbreads aren’t really bread, but thymus glands. Sounds gross, but it was delish. Prolly because of all the fat and brain chemicals. I also had a glass of come Cava-something Rose wine, which went surprisingly well with the dinner.

I never really had any of the above dishes, so all the tastes were new. It’s a pleasant sensation, eating something you’ve never eaten (assuming it was good). At the end of dinner, Robyn passed out hazelnut chocolate. She and her friends then went to go get gelato. I didn’t go along, because I already had some frozen dessert earlier that day with Jason at Pinkberry. I have my limits.
